Microsoft is rolling out a test feature that uses AI to automatically sort photos in the Windows 11 Photos app. An update headed to Windows 11 Insiders on Copilot Plus PCs will create dedicated folders for receipts, screenshots, identity documents, and handwritten notes, moving matching images into those folders based on visual content rather than file names.
Microsoft says the categorization works across languages — the Photos app will recognize document types even if the text isn’t in English (the Verge article gives the example of a Hungarian passport still being sorted into identity documents). After the app groups images, those folders appear under the Categories section in the left navigation pane.
For now the feature only recognizes the four categories above, though the Verge notes it would be more useful if users could request custom categories (for example, “dogs” or “beach”) in future versions. The rollout is described as a test for Insiders and aims to make it easier to sift through cluttered photo libraries.
