OpenAI Launches Sora 2 with Cameos App

OpenAI has released Sora 2, a step-up video generation model that pairs much-improved physical realism with synchronized audio and dialogue. Compared to earlier versions, Sora 2 produces longer 5–10 second clips that better handle complex scene changes and physics, and it can generate matching sound design and realistic speech that aligns with the visuals.

Alongside the model, OpenAI launched a social video app built around a “Cameos” feature that lets users record themselves and insert their likeness into AI-generated scenes, remix clips, and share content. The app is rolling out free with usage limits in the U.S. and Canada; Pro subscribers get access to a Sora 2 Pro model, and API access is slated to arrive soon.

Why it matters: Sora 2’s advances push video synthesis further into photorealism and synchronized multimodal generation, opening new storytelling and viral-meme possibilities. Cameos in particular could enable rapid memetic spread — offering instant viral potential — but the newsletter cautions about the “slop factor” of low-quality content flooding feeds and whether the app will sustain engagement beyond initial novelty.
