01 Oct 2025- OpenAI launches Instant Checkout in ChatGPT (U.S.), enabling in-chat purchases via Stripe with Etsy initially, open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol, signaling a shift toward agent-driven AI commerce.
OpenAI has launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT for U.S. users, enabling purchases to be completed without leaving the chat. Shoppers can tap a "Buy" button after ChatGPT recommends a product, review order details, and pay in-chat. The initial integration supports Etsy sellers, and OpenAI says availability for more than 1 million Shopify merchants is coming soon. The feature is built in partnership with Stripe.
Underpinning the system is an open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) that any retailer can adopt; Stripe merchants reportedly need minimal code changes to integrate. OpenAI will collect fees from merchants on completed sales, while product rankings in suggestions remain organic and relevance-driven rather than paid placements.
The Rundown frames Instant Checkout and the ACP as an inflection point toward “agentic AI commerce”: conversations that directly convert into transactions. The move creates a new revenue stream for OpenAI and surfaces questions about future monetization (for example, whether ads might be folded into the flow). For now, the change signals a notable shift in where and how online shopping can occur—mid-conversation inside generative AI.
