17 Jan 2026- OpenAI globally launched ChatGPT Go, an $8/month mid‑tier offering more GPT‑5.2 Instant messages, uploads, image generations and larger context windows; ad‑supported in the US soon.
OpenAI has expanded a lower-cost ChatGPT tier called ChatGPT Go to the US and the rest of the world. The Verge reports Go first launched in India in August and had already been made available in roughly 170 countries before the global release. OpenAI says Go saw strong adoption in markets where it was available.
ChatGPT Go costs $8 per month and sits between the free plan and the $20-per-month Plus plan. According to the company’s announcement, Go subscribers will get more messages, file uploads, and image generations than free users.
OpenAI positions Go as a way to get greater access to the fast version of its latest model, GPT‑5.2 Instant. Free users are currently limited to 10 GPT‑5.2 messages every five hours (after which chats fall back to a “mini” model); Plus users get 160 messages every three hours. The Verge notes OpenAI’s claim that Go provides “10x” the messages, files, and images of the free tier, which suggests Go might offer around 100 GPT‑5.2 messages, but the company did not confirm exact caps.
The announcement also says Go users will have larger memory and context windows than free users (the article reiterates current context windows: 16K non-reasoning for free, 32K for Plus, and 196K for reasoning for both). OpenAI added it will “soon” start running ads in Go in the US; Plus and higher tiers will remain ad-free.
