OpenAI has signed a seven‑year, $38 billion agreement with Amazon Web Services for large‑scale compute capacity, marking a major diversification away from Microsoft. The deal gives OpenAI access to “hundreds of thousands” of NVIDIA GPUs across AWS data centers, with deployment targeted to be completed by late 2026. The contract is designed to flexibly scale to support live ChatGPT traffic as well as training and development of upcoming models.

According to the report, last week’s renegotiation with Microsoft removed prior exclusivity requirements, enabling OpenAI to buy capacity from multiple providers. The AWS agreement sits inside a broader infrastructure plan OpenAI describes as a roughly $1.4 trillion buildout that includes partnerships with Oracle, Google, NVIDIA, and Broadcom.

Observers note questions about the sustainability of such massive compute spending relative to OpenAI’s revenue. CEO Sam Altman addressed investor concerns bluntly on a podcast, saying, “If you want to sell your shares, I’ll find you a buyer.” The move underscores how competition for GPU capacity and multi‑cloud strategies are shaping the economics and vendor relationships of major AI developers.
