Google's Veo 3 adds vertical, 1080p support

Google has updated its Veo 3 video-generation models to support vertical video and higher-resolution outputs. Both Veo 3 and the lower-cost Veo 3 Fast can now produce 9:16 aspect-ratio clips — a format better suited to phones and social apps — by setting aspectRatio=9:16 in API requests. The change is targeted at developers integrating Veo into their apps via the Gemini API, rather than end users on Google’s site or apps directly.

The update also raises the maximum output resolution to 1080p (previously 720p), though reporting from Neowin indicates 1080p may currently be limited to 16:9 videos. Google says it’s making Veo 3 and Veo 3 Fast “stable and ready for scaled production use” and has cut prices: Veo 3 generation is now $0.40 per second (down from $0.75) and Veo 3 Fast is $0.15 per second (down from $0.40).

Google showcased example vertical clips — including a short rock-climbing demo — and previously said Veo 3 support would arrive for YouTube Shorts. The Verge notes giving developers vertical-format access will likely increase AI-generated content on platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels.
