Google's Gemini Brings Live Translation to Headphones

Google has rolled out Gemini-powered upgrades to Translate that let live speech translations stream to any connected headphones on Android — a capability that had been limited to Pixel Buds. The update is powered by the Gemini 2.5 “Flash Native Audio” model, which the newsletter says improves conversational ability, instruction-following, and the use of real-time information for voice agents.

According to the report, the headphone translation feature supports 70+ languages while preserving the speaker’s tone, pacing, and cadence. Gemini 2.5’s broader world knowledge also helps it better interpret slang and culturally specific language for more nuanced translations. Google additionally expanded a Duolingo-style language practice mode to 20 more countries, adding features such as streak tracking and pronunciation feedback.
