Disney has struck a $1 billion deal with OpenAI that will let users of OpenAI’s Sora generative-video tool produce clips using hundreds of Disney-owned characters, and Disney plans to surface some of that user-created output in a dedicated area of Disney Plus. CEO Bob Iger framed the agreement as “an important moment” that will give customers “richer and more personal ways to connect with the Disney characters and stories they love,” and said it aims to “extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.”

The Verge notes tensions in the arrangement: Disney has recently joined other studios in legal fights over models trained on unlicensed IP, yet it’s paying OpenAI for access to Disney characters. Sora can produce glossy short clips, but they’re often inconsistent, uncanny, and prone to offensive misuse — a problem the article illustrates with prior incidents (for example Fortnite’s AI Vader being coaxed into saying hateful things). Disney says Sora won’t reproduce actors’ voices or likenesses, but the piece warns the studio effectively gains a low-cost pipeline of “slop” created by subscribers, who would be generating unpaid content Disney can stream.
