Anthropic’s Claude can now create and edit real files (Excel, Docs, PowerPoint, PDFs) in Claude.ai/desktop—running code in a private environment. Preview available; internet access raises data-risk warnings.
Anthropic announced that Claude can now create and edit actual files — Excel spreadsheets, documents, PowerPoint slide decks, and PDFs — directly in Claude.ai and the desktop app. Instead of only returning text, Claude can produce ready-to-use files from your instructions, uploaded data, or by building from scratch, turning multi-step projects into conversational workflows.
The feature is available as a preview for Max, Team, and Enterprise plan users today, with Pro access coming in the following weeks. Anthropic highlights examples such as cleaning raw data and generating analyses and charts, building multi-sheet spreadsheets with working formulas (financial models, project trackers, budgets), and cross-format conversions like turning a PDF report into PowerPoint slides or extracting invoice data into organized spreadsheets.
Technically, Claude now runs in a private computer environment where it can write and execute code to produce files, shifting from an advisor role to an active collaborator. To try it, enable “Upgraded file creation and analysis” under Settings > Features > Experimental, upload files or describe your needs, guide Claude in chat, then download results or save to Google Drive. Anthropic also warns that this feature gives Claude internet access to create and analyze files and may put data at risk, so users should monitor chats closely.
