Apple used its September event to add real-time, on‑device translation to AirPods. With a double‑stem press the system translates conversations live — you hear the other language in your AirPods while your replies appear as text on the other person’s iPhone. Apple Intelligence powers the feature and, crucially, the audio processing can run completely offline for privacy.
At launch the system supports five languages (English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish) and will add Italian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese later this year. Some Apple Intelligence features require an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. A practical limitation: unless both parties have compatible AirPods/phones it’s effectively one‑sided — your interlocutor may be reading subtitles on your device rather than hearing translations. Live Translation is also blocked in the EU for regulatory reasons.
Google’s Pixel Buds have offered similar capabilities for years and Google recently expanded its Translate integration to 70+ languages (including Live Translate in Meet), so Apple is catching up with a tightly integrated, privacy‑focused approach rather than reinventing the wheel.
