OpenAI is rolling out group chats inside ChatGPT, letting a conversation include up to 20 people. The feature left a short pilot and is now available globally to all logged‑in users. OpenAI pitches group chats as a way to collaborate — for example, organizing dinners, planning trips, or drafting outlines — with ChatGPT participating alongside friends, family, or coworkers.

You create a group chat by tapping the “people” icon in the top‑right of the ChatGPT app; your existing chat is copied into the new room and others can join via a shareable link. ChatGPT was trained to follow the “flow of the conversation,” attempting to decide when to chime in and when to stay quiet; you can mention “ChatGPT” directly to prompt a reply. The bot can react with emoji and use profile photos when generating personalized images.

Group chat settings (add/remove people, mute notifications, custom instructions) are accessed from the group icon. OpenAI says ChatGPT won’t use memories from your personal chats in group conversations and won’t create new memories from them. Responses in group chats are powered by GPT‑5.1 Auto, which selects the best model available for each prompt; rate limits apply only when ChatGPT sends a message in the chat.
