Google is disputing viral posts and at least one article suggesting Gmail now uses the content of users’ emails and attachments to train AI models unless users opt out by disabling Gmail “Smart Features.” A Google spokesperson, Jenny Thomson, told The Verge the reports are “misleading,” saying Gmail Smart Features have existed for years, the company hasn’t changed people’s settings en masse, and “we do not use your Gmail content for training our Gemini AI model.” The Verge notes it’s still worth checking your settings: one staffer said they had previously opted out of some Smart Features but found they were re-enabled. Google updated smart feature personalization settings in January so users can separately control Smart Features for Google Workspace and for other Google products (Maps, Wallet, etc.). Smart Features power conveniences like spell checking, order tracking, and adding flights from Gmail to your calendar. Workspace settings state that enabling personalization allows Google Workspace to use workspace content and activity to personalize experiences, but Google emphasizes that this does not equate to providing email content for AI model training. If you’re concerned, review Gmail’s Smart Features and Workspace personalization toggles to confirm your preferences.
