Disney Channel actor Calum Worthy has launched 2wai, an AI app that builds interactive “HoloAvatars” of deceased relatives that can speak and interact across life events. The platform claims it can generate a lifelike avatar from just minutes of recorded footage; a promotional clip showing an AI grandmother interacting with her grandson from infancy to adulthood went viral and drew thousands of critical responses on X (Twitter), with many comparing the idea to a techno‑dystopian Black Mirror scenario.
The newsletter reports the app’s beta is free on Apple’s App Store, with plans for a tiered subscription model and an eventual Android release. 2wai’s features center on preserving memories through chattable avatars that simulate the deceased’s presence, but the rollout has prompted intense backlash.
Critics described the product as “demonic” or “objectively evil,” arguing it risks exploiting grief, creating false continuity without the deceased’s consent, and potentially interfering with healthy mourning. The reaction highlights growing ethical concerns about emotional attachment to AI, identity and consent for digital replicas, and the commodification of bereavement.
